If your company or organization can’t function without your guidance and leadership then your personal health becomes as important as your bottom line. Technology has required us to remain so connected – we can’t shut down. Even vacations become an attempt at squeezing more work in, while taking us even further way from the original goal – rest and relaxation.
I’m just as guilty as the next. My iPhone sits on the nightstand. I eat lunch at my desk. And, my alarm clock rings shortly after what used to be “last call.”
In today’s fast-paced environment, it’s critical for successful professionals to schedule some “me time.” But this precious time improves concentration, work performance, and ultimately makes us remember why we work so hard.
- Sleep must be THE top priority. Studies show sleeping at least seven hours a night markedly improves brain function, lowers blood pressure, and replaces brain neurotransmitters—those “creative juices” so important to the top-functioning professional. And, we’ll also live and love longer. I want to be around to see not only my company, but my children grow. It starts with better sleep habits.
- Eat healthy. Only fuel your body with food that makes you feel healthy and strong. The brain actually functions better on more fatty acids than protein. Thus, eating healthy includes healthy oils and monounsaturated fats (nuts, olive oils). A healthy balanced diet actually improves thinking and creativity. Try never to make important business decisions on an empty stomach.
- Physical exercise is a must. If you’re like me and the task list is never-ending, it’s easy to push exercise off. However, this is the wrong way to prioritize your time. Exercise lowers blood pressure while increasing blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. Even just the recommended 30 minutes, three times per week as suggested by the AHA, dramatically increases neuronal flow and improves memory and concentration. Exercise improves both the brain and the body in general. I bought a laptop work station for my treadmill to aid in time management – it helps motivate me to get on the machine.
